Creamy, delicious, nutty, full of spices, and rich. Every Description I want for a delicious cup of Hot Chocolate. This Mexican Hot Chocolate is a warm hug on a cold winter day.
Mexican Chocolate
What makes this Mexican Hot Chocolate so delicious is the Mexican chocolate, and the sweetened condensed milk. What is Mexican Chocolate? It’s a mix of toasted cocoa nibs often ground with almonds, sugar, cinnamon, and other additional spices. Mexican chocolate can be hard to find in the states sometimes. I’ve usually been able to find the Taza brand at Whole Foods as well as online on Amazon. It comes in all sorts of different flavors that will work with this recipe, but my favorite is the cinnamon bar. Linked below is a variety pack of different flavors. I recommend trying them all this winter season. Taza Chocolate Organic Mexicano Disc Stone Ground, Oaxacan Variety Pack, 1.35 Ounce (4 Count), Vegan (paid link).
Grating Chocolate
Most hot chocolate mixes here in the states are powder mixes that get mixed with hot water or milk. Mexican chocolate comes in blocks. You’ll be waiting a very long time for that to melt if you just toss in the entire block. It is vital to grate the chocolate into your milk. I rely on my Microplane zester for this. Linked here: Microplane 46020 Premium Classic Series Zester Grater, 18/8, Black (Paid link). I use this almost every-time I cook! It’s sharp, and is perfect for zesting citrus, finely grating cheese, and chocolate!
