How to Choose Avocados
The color, feel, and the stem are all indications of avocado ripeness. Ripe avocados are typically a dark brown (almost black) with subtle hints of green. When you hold the avocado in your the palm of your hand and lightly press it should feel soft but not mushy. Lastly, pick an avocado that still has the stem attached as avocados are more likely to turn brown when the stem is detached.
How to Choose Pomegranates
Size, weight, color, feel, and the crown are all indications of pomegranate ripeness. A ripe pomegranate is typically between the size of an orange and a grapefruit. It should also be slightly square where the juicy arils are pressing against the outer walls. Avoid choosing one that is shaped like an apple. Darker red pomegranates are sweeter. The appendages in the crown should be turned slightly inward. A ripe pomegranate will feel heavier than it looks, indicating that it is full juice. Finally, the skin should be smooth and tight, cracks and blemishes indicate that it is past ripeness.
